When I'm not doing research, you will most likely find me doing one of the following.
Traveling and hiking
I've traveled extensively in the US (43 states) and India (10 states) and have also been to Australia, Canada, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. My favorite way to get to know a new place is to explore on foot. Some of my all-time favorite hikes have been Mount Atalaya (Santa Fe), Gem Lake (Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado), Mount Rainier (Seattle), Mystic Falls (Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming), and the El Yunque Rainforest (Puerto Rico). My goal is to one day hike Mount Kilimanjaro.
I started running a couple years ago and will run my first half-marathon (the Indy Mini) in May 2018. I try to start my morning with a run at least a couple days a week. And I find that when I've been staring at my computer screen for too many hours straight, a quick run really helps me clear my head and return to work with renewed energy and creativity.
Experimenting in the kitchen
I enjoy trying out new recipes, and I try to balance taste with nutrition. I love exploring different cuisines in my cooking, including Thai, Mexican, Indian, Mediterranean, and Italian...sometimes combining ingredients to create fusions.
Strength training and Martial arts
I hold a first degree black belt in Kenpo Karate, and I practiced the martial arts all through high school and college. Since then, I have gotten into strength training and do weight lifting a couple days per week.
Knitting things for my friends and family
I started knitting when I was working in the DC area and looking for an activity to do on my bus commute. Knitting while watching a documentary is still one of my favorite ways to unwind at the end of the day. Knitting uses a completely different side of my brain and helps me relax.
